The Three Amigos!

Sally, Sophie and Lily have been with us this week on student placement.
They have been a great help during a busy week.
They have worked on post production work from a recent wedding and also assisted Steve Barber our foto imagica colleague on some product photography and with some portraits of our friends from Ibex Internet.
Oh, and they have also made a video and taken one or two photographs themselves………

They answered some questions to let people know a little bit about themselves and what they have been doing:

Who are you and what are you doing?
Sophie from the Lakes School, in year 10 and doing work experience with Foto Imagica.
Lily from The Lakes School on work experience.
Sally from Queen Elizabeth School, I’m in Year 10 doing Work Experience.

What do you like about photography?
Sophie: I like photography because it’s a way of self-expression and I like how you can edit the photos afterwards to make them look even better. I like how you can position people and things to get a more interesting picture.
Lily:I enjoy capturing memorable moments for everyone to see, and I enjoy seeing how great some of the pictures look once I upload them.
Sally: Being creative an experimenting with different surroundings and then editing photos I’ve taken.

Why are you doing a photography work placement?
Sophie: I want to learn more about photography because I am considering it as a future career.
Lily:To see what it is like being a professional photographer and how the business works.
Sally:To learn more about the different things involved in photography.

What kind of photography do you enjoy?
Sophie:I like photography including people, and abstract photographs.
Lily:My favourite type is people in the outdoors, to see how many weird and wonderful places I can capture them in.
Sally:People in the outdoors.

What do you like about living in the Lake District?
Sophie:I like the surroundings and the scenery, and the fact that when it’s hot we can go down to the lake. But I also like the whether, because I love rain.
Lily:So many places to visit, with lakes, mountains and beautiful sceneries even when the weather isn’t always the best!
Sally:It has a good opportunity for stunning photography.

Tell us about the photos?
Russell asked us to test out with his camera different apertures, to see what we had learnt. The next day we were asked to go out and take pictures based around about 10 words, we went around the studio and down by the lake to experiment with different lighting and scenery and also to test out different apertures again.

So what have you learnt?
The wider the aperture the more light is let into the picture. This is controlled by the shutter speed, if the shutter speed is too long it will overexpose the photo. I have also learnt about ISO and editing.

Which is your favourite picture and why?
Sophie: My favourite picture is the one of Sally looking through the wooden gate, I think it has a lot of emotion and is very ambiguous. I also like the way we edited it.
Lily:My favourite picture is the one of Sophie lying on the pier with her deep red hair spread out behind her. It gives such a neutral and relaxed feeling, and the contrast with her red hair makes it really interesting.
Sally:The picture of Lily on the gate is my favourite, because it has a really nice background with an old fashioned look. I also love the sequence of black and white photos of Lily lying on the pier, because they have a lot of emotion.
